Word Tip: How to Display Nonprinting Characters

When using Word, you don't always see what's on the page.  Spaces and tabs are there, for instance, and they're important parts of your document, but they don't usually show up … unless you make use of a handy feature.  Here's how:
  • Go to the Tool menu and choose Options.
  • When Word displays the Options dialog box, select the View tab.
  • In the Formatting Marks area (Word 2000, Word 2002, and Word 2003), or the Nonprinting Characters area (Word 97), select the characters you want to display.
  • Click OK.

Inserting an Em Dash

An em dash is a long dash.  It appears as the length of three hyphens, but it only takes two to create.  With Word 95 and later, you can insert an em dash by typing a word, then proceeding without a space and typing two hyphens, then proceeding without a space and typing the next word.  Word automatically replaces the hyphens with the em dash.  If that capability is turned off in your software, you can press CTRL+ALT+MINUS (on the numeric keypad).  Or you can go to the Insert menu, choose Symbol, click the Special Characters tab, and select Em Dash.  The latter two options work in any version of Word.

Counting Home Page Hits

E-zekiel automatically counts how many times your home page has been viewed.  You'll find that number when you sign into your Control Panel and click on the Statistics manager icon.  If you'd like to start the count over, you can do so simply by clicking the "Reset counter to zero" link.

Email Newsletters Build Community

Email newsletters are a good way to reach targeted audiences by sending timely information right to your member's inbox. You can use them to promote upcoming events, alert others to prayer needs, or remind committees about scheduled meetings.  There are many other uses too that basically serve the purpose of providing useful information to people who would want or need to know.  As members feel more informed, they also feel more involved in decisions and activities.  And increased involvement builds community.

Adding a Newsletter to Your Site

A church or ministry website is a logical place to post a newsletter – whether as a follow up to one you've already printed and mailed or as an electronic alternative to the traditional method.  E-zekiel gives you several options for adding a newsletter:
The Syndication Manager – Use the same steps you would for creating a blog and allow visitors to subscribe to your newsletter.
Uploaded Document – Upload a newsletter that may have been created in a PDF or Word document to your "My Files" area, then create a link to the newsletter document.
New Page – A third option is to create the newsletter as a new page and add the content as you would add any content inside the editor.

Google Customers Target of Phishing Scam

If you're a Google customer (or even if you're not), someone could be "phishing" for your personal financial information.  Phishing is a scam where the perpetrator sends an email with an official-looking address that intends to trick the recipient into revealing sensitive financial information.
Google customers have recently reported receiving supposedly official correspondence from such addresses as support@google.com or adwords-noreply@google.com.  If customers click the link, they're taken to a fake site that asks you to divulge your account information or credit card numbers.  The messages might say something like:
Dear Google AdWords Customer,
We were unable to process your payment.
Your ads will be suspended soon unless we can process your payment.
To prevent your ads from being suspended, please update your payment information.
Even if the links look official don't click on them. If you would like to check your account, go to Google AdWords and log in as you normally would.

A Special Way to Paste

Have you ever wondered what "Paste Special" means in the Word Edit menu?  This is a means by which you can get text that has been copied and pasted to match the formatting of the destination document.  Generally, as you copy text from the Web or a document into a Word file, you'll retain the typeface, text color and font size of the original.  To change the formatting to match its new location as it arrives, copy highlighted text, go to the destination document, click Edit, then Paste Special.  Choose Unformatted Text, click OK.

Breaks in Bulleted Lists

Word processing software can be so "helpful" sometimes that you can start to wonder why it won't let you do what you want to do.  Take creating a bulleted list, for example.  In Word, that's easy to do – assuming you only want a list of bullets.  You go to Format, click Bullets and Numbering, then select the bullet style you prefer.
But what if in the middle of this list, you have a line that doesn't need a bullet (example:  when a bullet has copy that needs to be divided into more than one paragraph).  Actually, that's easy too.  You can start a new line without a bullet simply by pressing Shift and Enter.  Then, when you're done with that content and press the Enter key again, the new line will continue the bulleted or numbered list.  This works the same in PowerPoint too.
