What is an application?

Tech-speak has evolved over the years and, unless you’re well versed in it, it can seem like a foreign language at times.  Take the word “application.”  In the regular world, this is what you use to apply for a job or a membership, etc.  In the tech world, however, it’s that you use for a computer program.
 
Actually, application is the same as “application program,” which is sometimes just called “program.”  (See how easy it is to understand tech-speak?)  Application and program are used as synonyms for a computer program that helps you accomplish specific tasks – word processing, database management, desktop publishing, website design, and on and on.
 
When several applications are bundled together in one package, that’s called an “application suite.”  Microsoft Office – with its word processor, spread sheet, presentation and email applications – is a well known example.
 

Keep Your Site Current Ahead of Time

Planning to take time off this summer?  Great idea!  But that certainly doesn’t mean your website can’t stay current while you’re away.  With E-zekiel, you can designate publish dates and end dates on any pages you create, as well as on panels you use to promote events and activities.  You can set a distribution date for blogs and podcasts too.  That way, your site can still keep displaying new information (and removing old information) whether you’re here, there or yon.

Backing Up Your Data

Backing up data is not just the purview of large corporations with systemic procedures.  It’s a safety-net practice for organizations of all sizes – and even of individuals who want to protect copies of anything from correspondence to photos kept on home computers.
 
A “backup” is basically a duplicate copy of your work that you’re keeping for archival purposes or protection against damage or loss and that is saved to some type of removable storage like CD or flash drive or magnetic tape.  A “secure backup” means you’re keeping it in another location.
 
Backing up data is standard practice in computer use, but easy to overlook on any given day.  Putting a regular “backup” provision in place will save a whole lot of heartache and work should your computer fail at a most inopportune time.

Bandwidth: A Brief Explanation

Bandwidth in computer terms, has to do with the rate of data transferred – or the amount of data carried from one point to another over a certain period of time.  (By “time,” in computer terms, we mean just about a second.)  Bandwidth is typically expressed in bits (of data) per second (bps) but also bytes per second (Bps).  Bandwidth can be used to measure how busy a website is.
 

Saving All at Once

If you're about to rush off to a meeting, or need to restart your computer, or have some other reason for wanting to save all your open Word documents, you can do so all at once with a "Save Al"” command.
 
To find it, press the Shift key as you click the File menu, and the menu will display the Save All and Close All commands.
 
You can also put these commands directly on the menu or toolbar.  Go to Tools and then Customize.  Click the Commands tab.  Select the File toolbar, scroll down to the Save All item, then drag it to the menu or toolbar you prefer.

Selecting Blocks of Text

You may be familiar with the "Select All" option in the Word edit toolbar.  But have you ever wondered if there's a way to "Select Most?"  You can do that – select all, most or some text – with a simple process.  Give a quick click on your cursor at the place you want the selection to start.  Then, at the place you want it to end, press the shift key and click the mouse again.
 
Another option:  press the shift key, then one of the arrow keys.  Continue pressing the arrow key until you reach your endpoint.  The text selects based on the direction of the arrow key you choose.
