Dangerous Celebrity Searches

Friday, August 28, 2009 View Comments Comments (0)
The Internet puts a world of information right at your fingertips – and a good bit of risk at the same time.  McAfee, the computer security firm, recently released a list of top 10 celebrity searches that can lead to the most trouble.  Number one on the list was Jessica Biel.  One in five searches for the former star of 7th Heaven leads to pages, photos, videos, etc. that contain a cyber-security threat.  Beyonce, Jennifer Aniston, Tom Brady and Jessica Simpson follow in second through fifth place, while Brad Pitt comes in at tenth.

As you prepare for a busy season of activities, remember that planning events is made easier with E-zekiel.  Schedule and promote musical performances, retreats, fellowships, seminars and more with the aid of the Event manager.  By filling in the publication dates, you can schedule in advance when the info will appear on and disappear from your site.  If your package comes with the Store manager too, you can also allow event participants to complete registrations and payment online.

The Christian Embassy of Christ's Ambassadors – headquartered in Victoria in the Canadian province of British Columbia – has been sponsoring Global Forgiveness Day since 1994.  It began with a single banner in downtown Victoria, and now the idea has become an annual celebration. This year it’s scheduled for August 27.  For more information, visit www.ceca.cc/global_forgiveness_day.html

Summer Fun On Your Site

Friday, August 14, 2009 View Comments Comments (0)
Was your church a hubbub of activity this summer?  Youth choir tours, ice cream socials, vacation bible school, potluck dinners, neighborhood and community ministries, mission trips and more… before your summer fun fades from memory, capture the highlights in photo albums you create on your site.

If your E-zekiel package has the Albums manager, you’ll start by creating a main Albums page.  From there, you can add an unlimited number of albums.  But please remember, your storage space will have limits, depending on your plan.  Keeping a close watch on image size, however, will likely keep you well within limits.

Another good thing to know:  while the Album Manager page is the page that houses your albums, you can also use internal site links to link another page to a specific album.

The Pages manager is perhaps the most important manager within your site.  It is certainly used more than any other manager.  It is, after all, where most of the pages in your site are created and maintained.  In this session, we'll look at the various capabilities of the Pages manager including search-friendly page setup as well as tools on the editor toolbar such as hyperlinks, images, and tables. Join us for the how-tos and helpful hints of the Pages manager!

Choosing Another Word

When you’re looking for just the right word, Microsoft Word can help.  Need a synonym? Just highlight the word in the document, then press the shift key and F7 simultaneously.  A list of synonyms, along with access to a thesaurus, will appear on the right of the screen.  You can also find the thesaurus by going to the Tools menu and selecting Language.

Using Photo Captions

A picture may be worth a thousand words, but photo captions can help tell part of the story too – like providing names, dates, locations or other identifying information.  Captions on a website are particularly helpful for site visitors who are not familiar with your church or its members.

To place a caption with an image in E-zekiel, use the text attribute in the Image Properties dialogue box.  Click on "Insert/Edit Image" button in the Editor.  When the Image Properties dialogue box comes up, choose the Advance tab, then go to the "Advisory Title" field where you can type in the caption. The caption will appear when the mouse hovers over the image.

Maintaining Your Website

Tuesday, July 14, 2009 View Comments Comments (0)
Websites for churches and ministries are growing in importance comparable to the traditional weekly print newsletter, though they can be created and maintained without nearly the cost of printing and postage. Because they are a primary means of communication, be sure to assign the appropriate staff (or volunteer) resources for their care and upkeep.  For example, you may want to assign responsibilities for sections – if not for making the actual changes and updates at least the collection of information.  Keeping content current gives visitors a reason to return again and again.

Remember that communication is a two-way street.  As visitors send email requests and inquiries, these messages should receive a response.  An automated “thank you for your inquiry” is a start, but should be followed by a personal response from staff (or volunteer) as the request warrants.

Also, it’s a good idea to have someone check the site periodically to make sure links are still working and that outdated information has been removed.  E-zekiel, of course, gives you the option to publish and remove content on a dated schedule.
