Faith-Based Disaster Response

Friday, May 13, 2011 View Comments Comments (0)
Shortly after the April tornado outbreak that hit the South, Alabama in particular, with such devastation, The New York Times ran an article highlighting faith-based response to natural disasters. Giving attention particularly to the Southern Baptist disaster relief organization, the article said, “Nearly 95,000 Baptists across the country are trained to handle disasters like hurricanes and floods. After the Red Cross and the Salvation Army, the Baptist group is the biggest disaster relief organization in the country.”

The Web, of course, is an especially useful tool for organizing disaster relief provided by faith-based groups. For example, the Alabama Baptist Convention State Board of Missions set up a page with updates and ways to help. Many others have done likewise.

Major News Events Lead to Cybercrime Increase

Friday, May 06, 2011 View Comments Comments (0)
Major news events are not just a time to pay attention to what’s happening in the world; this is also a time to beware of cybercrime. The death of bin Laden in particular was followed by an uptick in cybercrime and scams. Malicious links to photos and videos were sent through email and posted on social media sites such as Facebook – and clicking on these links can install malware on your computer. Unfortunately, it’s just one thing you can expect – because when news is big, perpetrators know people are going to the web in search of more information, and  they take advantage of the unsuspecting and unprepared. So proceed with caution. Be wary of links in email. Only visit news sites you trust. And make sure your antivirus and firewall software is up to date.

Churches Increasingly Turn to Social Media Tools

Friday, April 08, 2011 View Comments Comments (0)
Social networking tools are increasingly being used as ministry aids, and, in particular, 47% of churches are actively using Facebook, according to a study recently released by LifeWay Research. Social-savvy churches are using these tools in several ways:
73 percent for interacting with the congregation
70 percent for distributing news and information in an "outbound only" manner
52 percent for fostering member-to-member interaction
41 percent for managing the church's group ministry
62 percent for interacting with individuals outside the congregation.

Is your church connected through social media? E-zekiel recently updated the site toolbar to include Facebook and Twitter icons. To display the icons, open your Account manager and add the URL (web address) for your Facebook and Twitter pages in the appropriate fields. The social icons will not appear in the toolbar if the fields are left blank.

Religion Fills the Blogosphere

When the Pew Research Center released a recap of “religion in the news” for 2010, one of the findings was that religion appeared more often as a major topic in the blogosphere than it did in traditional media. In fact, religion was among the most-discussed topics on blogs in 12 of the 48 weeks studied.   Are you joining in the countless voices no doubt expressing countless views? Blogs are easy to create in E-zekiel, they can increase search engine rankings for your site, and they are a useful way to spread messages of truth that can be found by people seeking a better understanding of Christianity.

Changing the Page Order in Your Menu

Friday, March 18, 2011 View Comments Comments (0)
All it takes is a bit of basic HTML code to reorder the pages that you add as links to your site menu. Go to the Pages manager and open (or add) the page. In the field for Menu Title, type <!– a –> before the page title for the page that you want to appear first in your menu listing. Continue with <!– b –>, <!– c –> and so forth for subsequent pages. Visit E-zekiel's online manual to learn more.

This process will take care of your page ordering in the menu – but to reorder the other managers that are also added as links to your site menu, you’ll need to take an additional step.  These include Events, Syndication, Media, Resources and Albums. If you want to relocate them in the site menu, follow these steps:
  • Create a page in the Pages manager with a title similar to (or the same as) the manager page you want to relocate and make sure the "Add Link to Site Menu" value is "Yes".
  • Use the shortcut field to input the full URL for your manager (should look something like "http://www.yoursite.com/events")
  • Return to your manager settings tab and change the "Add Link to Site Menu" value to "No"
  • Repeat the process for additional manager pages.

Easy Ways to Share Media

Friday, March 11, 2011 View Comments Comments (0)
E-zekiel’s Media manager and E-zekiel.tv provide ways that you can share your media – and others can help you share it too. For example, when you use the E-zekiel Media manager to upload video and audio files to your site, an embed code will be displayed beneath your media. This code can be used to embed your video on another site and keep spreading your messages. Additionally, the media is also displayed with a link, which can be used to bring visitors from another site back to your site and your media.

Media Audio and video files uploaded to your siLike and Share Features

Audio and video files uploaded to your site through the E-zekiel Media Manager are accompanied by icons that let your viewers “like” your media as well as share it with a friend or through Twitter and Facebook. This gives site visitors another way to interact with your content – and it also gives them a way to help spread your messages. In addition, the more times a video or audio is “liked,” the more likely someone else will want to view it.

How do I set up my mobile device to receive email?

Friday, February 25, 2011 View Comments Comments (0)

While mobile devices differ in their specific setups they generally require the same information.  Below you'll find a list of common settings needed for email setup:

Username: Enter your full email address such as emailaccount@yourdomain.com
Password:  Enter the password for your email account
Incoming Server: mail.websrvcs.com (if your device prompts for an SSL connection use securemail.websrvcs.com)
Outgoing Server: mail.websrvcs.com (if your device prompts for an SSL connection use securemail.websrvcs.com)

*The Outgoing server does require authentication - use the same username and password anywhere the device requests it

If after setting the email account up you can receive but not send, change your outgoing port number from 25 to 587.  This setting may be in an advanced section of the email setup.
