Local Listings with Google Places

Friday, July 15, 2011 View Comments Comments (0)
Have you listed your church on Google Places? As Google will tell you, 97% of consumers search for local businesses online. And somewhere within those very high numbers, quite a few will also search for a church.

These days “local” is the new “global”. We’ve been astounded and impressed by how far-reaching the Web can go, but what we really want to know is, “What’s in my community?” Google Places, which was known as the “Local Business Center” until mid-2010, was designed to help people find restaurants, theaters, businesses and, yes, churches, in their own communities.

Google Places is free and easy to set up. Just submit your information and then verify your listing. You can even enhance your listing by adding photos, videos, and upcoming events.

News About Domain Names

There’s news recently from the world of domain names. The regulatory body that governs all things .com, .net, .info and more has agreed to revamp the domain naming system and allow more personalized suffixes. In the near future, organizations and businesses will be able to use brands or places -- .toyota or .newyork, for example. It’s all thanks to an action from ICANN – Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers – and yes, there really is such a place. You can read an article about the announcement here:

Whatever choices become available, as always, E-zekiel will continue to manage domain name acquisition and annual renewals for our customers. If at any time, you’d like to add a domain name for your site, just let us know.

Communicating with a QR Code

Friday, June 03, 2011 View Comments Comments (0)
Are you familiar with QR codes? If you’ve got a smartphone, maybe so. For marketing purposes, the smartphone user is the one to whom these apply – and that could include a number of your members.

A QR code is a barcode that comes in the form of a small black-and-white square that looks like a jigsaw puzzle barely filled in. The QR codes can be scanned by smartphones equipped with a camera and a QR Reader App, and they can direct the smartphone user to a related website. For example, when E-zekiel.com posts a message about our monthly newsletter on Facebook, a QR code is included and, when scanned by smartphone user, will take the customer to the page where the newsletter is located.

Churches and ministries can use QR codes to communicate with a connected, mobile membership – providing links to landing pages for your newsletters, activities, missions opportunities and more. QR codes can be placed on websites and social media and on printed pieces, too, thus connecting online and offline marketing in ways that have not been available before.  Creating a QR code can easily be done at a number of sites, such as www.qurify.comhttp://delivr.com and http://qrcode.kaywa.com/.

Keep in Touch This Summer

Friday, May 27, 2011 View Comments Comments (0)
Memorial Day Weekend is typically seen as the launch of summer. With so many taking time off for vacations or weekend getaways, church members can lose their "connectedness" to their congregation during these months. So how can you use E-zekiel technology to keep information flowing and relationships growing?
  • Promote your summer activities through events and panel tools.
  • Create and distribute blogs that highlight summer activities -- youth choir tour, vacation bible school, church family picnics, etc.
  • Capture memories as they're taking place and create photo albums for your site to share that sense of fellowship and good times.
  • Don't forget videos for sharing special messages. Upload through the media manager to Ezekiel.tv

Faith-Based Disaster Response

Friday, May 13, 2011 View Comments Comments (0)
Shortly after the April tornado outbreak that hit the South, Alabama in particular, with such devastation, The New York Times ran an article highlighting faith-based response to natural disasters. Giving attention particularly to the Southern Baptist disaster relief organization, the article said, “Nearly 95,000 Baptists across the country are trained to handle disasters like hurricanes and floods. After the Red Cross and the Salvation Army, the Baptist group is the biggest disaster relief organization in the country.”

The Web, of course, is an especially useful tool for organizing disaster relief provided by faith-based groups. For example, the Alabama Baptist Convention State Board of Missions set up a page with updates and ways to help. Many others have done likewise.

Major News Events Lead to Cybercrime Increase

Friday, May 06, 2011 View Comments Comments (0)
Major news events are not just a time to pay attention to what’s happening in the world; this is also a time to beware of cybercrime. The death of bin Laden in particular was followed by an uptick in cybercrime and scams. Malicious links to photos and videos were sent through email and posted on social media sites such as Facebook – and clicking on these links can install malware on your computer. Unfortunately, it’s just one thing you can expect – because when news is big, perpetrators know people are going to the web in search of more information, and  they take advantage of the unsuspecting and unprepared. So proceed with caution. Be wary of links in email. Only visit news sites you trust. And make sure your antivirus and firewall software is up to date.
